By Sabirah Mustafa - What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. It’s an ad slogan with some truth to it. People take the phrase seriously, shunning those who come back from Sin City with perpetually loose lips. I just came back from Vegas, with stories. I’m a storyteller. I like to talk. But the slogan gave me pause when deciding whether to share the details of my recent trip.

Health of the Hood – What Makes the Mills College Neighborhood Healthy?
By Katherine Brown - When trying to identify what makes my neighborhood healthy, I was hard pressed to find glaring examples of what is traditionally associated with “healthy living.” There aren’t any farmers markets, open green spaces, bike lanes, etc. The street that I live on is residential and is pretty quiet, and in some instances, kind of boring.
Going to Prison, Part I
By Debora Gordon - I drove down to visit Lam in the Kern Valley State Prison (KVSP) the weekend of December 7ththrough December 10th. I checked in by phone and email with the Public Information Officer, Lt. Jeff Smith, to help plan my visit. I learned what I could bring into the prison with me during my visit: almost nothing except my identification and a plastic bag filled with quarters, if I wanted to treat Lam (or myself) to any of the vending machine foodstuff available in the visitation area.
‘Teacher Don’ Takes the Helm of OUSD’s New Adult Ed Learning Bus
By Debora Gordon - One of the coolest things happening in the Oakland Unified School District right now is the high tech mobile adult education classroom, an RV outfitted with Wi-Fi and laptops, driven by Teacher Don. The bus, which spends several weeks at about eight different elementary and middle schools around the district, is a hopeful note, in what has been a somewhat dismal prognosis for adult education throughout California for the last several years.
White-On-White Crime Makes Lots of Noise, Even if You’ve Never Heard of It
By Ronald Owens - Mass murders get some people all stirred up. TV news shows become obsessed and devote all their attention to the homicides and to peoples’ reactions to them. You go to work or to the supermarket and that’s all people are talking about. The President of the United States even breaks into national television programming to deliver a speech decrying violence and the use of guns to shoot innocent victims.

Sequester will rip apart higher education in Indian Country
I had better not bury the lede: The sequester is going to rip apart higher education in Indian Country. It’s going to be ugly, folks, and worse, self-defeating. Haskell Indian Nations University is facing a budget cut that’s almost 30 percent. This is what “deep” spending cuts look like.
Now let’s explore the logical, make that the illogical, progression.

Going to Prison, Part II: Getting In, the Visiting Room, and Lockdown
By Debora Gordon - After my visit with Lt. Smith, I had some time to kill that Friday evening in Delano, California. While there may be more than meets the tourist eye, what the casual passer-through will see is mile after mile of strip malls and giant shopping complexes. The prison appears to the main industry there, except for retail and fast food.
Health of the Hood: East Oakland’s Community Gardens
By Howard Dyckoff - Food surrounds us in our daily lives. We share food at family and community events. But where do we get our food and how fresh is that food?
