John Temple is a senior fellow with the John S Knight Journalism Fellowships program at Stanford University, where he’s exploring the Silicon Valley way and the nexus between technology and journalism in a mobile world. He accepted the appointment after serving as a managing editor of The Washington Post, where he oversaw the newsroom’s digital operations as well as departments serving Washington-area readers. Before joining the Post, he was the founding editor and then editor and general manager of Honolulu Civil Beat, a pioneering local journalism initiative launched by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar. Temple has straddled the editorial and business sides in a number of news organizations, including at the Rocky Mountain News, where he was editor, president and publisher for many years before the paper closed in 2009. The paper won its first four Pulitzer Prizes and numerous other national awards under his leadership. He also has worked in a corporate role as VP/News of the newspaper division of the E.W. Scripps Co. (SSP) and led start-ups within Scripps, such as RedBlueAmerica.com, a national political/cultural site, and YourHub.com, a groundbreaking hyper-local citizen journalism initiative. He has a masters degree in journalism from Northwestern University, which inducted him into the Medill School of Journalism’s Hall of Achievement.
